How to Apply for a Library Card
A Petersburg Public Library card is free to any person living in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Armed services personnel and their dependents who are currently living within the Commonwealth of Virginia may receive a library card at no charge. Residents of Chesterfield County, City of Colonial Heights, and areas served by Appomattox Regional Library System (Dinwiddie, Prince George, Hopewell, and Disputanta), may also receive a Petersburg Public Library card at no charge.
Details and Requirements
Residents may receive a library card regardless of age. Children under 18 may obtain their own card with their parent’s permission. All adult applicants must furnish photo identification verifying their name, address, city, and state. If photo identification does not have current address, then additional documentation regarding address must be provided. Library cards are good for one year and may be renewed at that time.
Juvenile Library Access
- Children under 18 years of age must have a parent’s signature to obtain full Library privileges.
- Children 13-17 years of age may obtain a card which will allow them to access computers and check out one book and one DVD.
- Children 12 years of age and under must have a parent’s signature to obtain a card with full Library privileges, excepting DVD checkout; children may not check out DVDs classified as adults.

- Come into the library during that time to get a permanent card that will work with all of our services!

To register, print off the registration form then bring the form and valid identification to Petersburg Public Library or register online here.
Using your Library Card
A permanent library card can be used to access library services. With you card you can:
- Check out materials, including books, audiobooks and DVDs
- Check out electronic books and audiobooks through Hoopla and Overdrive
- Use public computers at the library
- Reserve meeting spaces.
- Use electronic databases for research
When using your card, if you are asked for a PIN, use the last for digits of the card number.
Materials can be checked out of the library for a limited time.
